HOUANG
Filmmaker and screenwriter

How do you get in the zone?
Maegan: I’m a bit of a night owl so sometimes I think I need to feel like I’ve gotten everything else in my life done before I can do my best writing. It’s pretty inconvenient, perhaps it’ll be a bad habit I one day grow out of?
In a parallel universe, what would your life be like? What would your art be like?
Maegan: I was such a math/science nerd as a kid that I think in a parallel universe I somehow convinced myself to be a physicist, probably specializing in thermal dynamics.
What makes your pulse quicken? What makes you feel ALIVE?
Maegan:
1. An amazing song
2. A perfect Vietnamese coffee
3. The trees
As a filmmaker, my entire practice is essentially one big collaboration. Whether it’s with department heads, actors or musicians, I’m constantly having a creative exchange with other artists.
Who is one of your newest found sources of inspiration?
Maegan: I admire my friend Andrew Thomas Huang more than words could express. His diligence and commitment to creating fantasy-driven works of art astounds me. I’m always excited to see what he does next. In addition to being a brilliant artist, he’s also an incredibly kind person and an amazing friend.
Who is one of your earliest sources of inspiration?
Maegan: As a child I came back to a few things over and over again: D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths, Beethoven’s 6th Symphony (The Pastoral Symphony) in Fantasia and The Secret of Nimh. I watched “The Pastoral Symphony” section so many times, my Fantasia VHS tape became thin.
What is your favorite time of day? Why?
Maegan: Even though I’m not a morning person, I love waking up around 7am and staying in bed with my dog. There’s something so soothing about seeing the light coming in but still being lazy and leisurely in bed.
Do you have anyone that you love to collaborate with?
Maegan: As a filmmaker, my entire practice is essentially one big collaboration. Whether it’s with department heads, actors or musicians, I’m constantly having a creative exchange with other artists. It’s truly what makes the job fun!
